Muskogee's Juneteenth Celebration Honors Legacy of Wilma Newton

Community gathers at Elliott Park to commemorate emancipation and remember a local pioneer

The Muskogee community came together on June 19, 2025, at Elliott Park to celebrate Juneteenth and pay tribute to the late Wilma Newton, the founder of the city's annual observance.

 

Newton, who passed away in April, dedicated 15 years to organizing Juneteenth events in Muskogee, fostering a tradition that honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

 

Her commitment transformed the local celebration into a cornerstone of the community's cultural calendar.

 

The day's festivities commenced at noon, featuring live music, traditional dance performances, and a variety of food vendors offering soul food classics.

 

Attendees of all ages participated in educational workshops that delved into the history and significance of Juneteenth, emphasizing its importance in the ongoing journey toward equality.

 

A highlight of the event was a heartfelt ceremony dedicated to Newton's memory.

 

Community leaders and family members shared stories of her unwavering dedication and the profound impact she had on Muskogee.

 

One speaker noted, "Wilma's passion for education and community engagement has left an indelible mark on all of us."

 

In addition to the Muskogee celebration, Juneteenth events took place across Oklahoma.

 

In Tulsa, the historic Greenwood District hosted a multi-day festival from June 18 to 21, featuring live music, cultural performances, and educational workshops.

 

Similarly, Oklahoma City held its annual "Juneteenth on the East" event, which included a 5K Freedom Run and a block party with food trucks and live entertainment.

 

These statewide celebrations underscore the growing recognition of Juneteenth's significance and the diverse ways communities honor this pivotal moment in American history.

 

As the sun set over Elliott Park, attendees reflected on the day's events and the enduring legacy of Wilma Newton.

 

Her vision and dedication have ensured that Muskogee's Juneteenth celebration remains a vibrant and meaningful tradition for generations to come.
