This Week in Muskogee Area History

December 21 – December 27

December 21, Early 1900s – The Muskogee area was firmly established as a regional transportation and business center, with railroads, river traffic, and commerce linking eastern Oklahoma to Arkansas and beyond.

 

December 23, 1870s – Settlements around Muskogee and Fort Gibson continued to grow during the Indian Territory era, supported by river trade along the Arkansas River and nearby military routes.

 

December 24, Late 1800s – Churches across the Muskogee area held Christmas Eve candlelight services, community meals, and charity efforts for families in need.

 

December 25, Early 1900s – Christmas Day in the Muskogee area often reflected Oklahoma’s unpredictable weather, from warm sunshine to snow and ice that slowed holiday travel.

 

December 26, 1861 – During the Civil War, the Muskogee region sat near key military supply routes in Indian Territory, placing the area close to major winter campaigns.

 

December 27, 1917–1918 – During World War I, residents supported the war effort through railroad work, factory production, and bond drives.
